Meeting Re-caps for 2011

July 27, 2011 at 6:00pm

Disaster Recovery is a topic that has become more and more important in recent years. We have lived through two consecutive hundred-year floods and the worst state-wide weather emergency/power outage in the area's history. All of these factors, coupled with some of the most challenging economic times most of us have experienced, make Disaster Recovery Planning more important than ever. The aim is to offer some tips and best practices to consider when establishing or updating your Disaster Recovery Plan.

Presented by Marc Berthiaume - Security and Compliance at Newmarket International

June 9, 2011 at 6:00pm

This month's meeting will focus on assembling an effective plan for utilizing a cloud infrastructure and will compare the differences of running your own data center and leveraging a service provider.

Roger McIlmoyle, Solution Architect at SunGard will be presenting.

April 19th Meeting Recap

The April meeting will cover a range of security topics about how to keep your organization secure including SIEM, IDS/IPS, etc.  The presentation will include a demo of the Nitro Security products.  Nitro is a local Portsmouth company racking up reviews in SC Magazine and others.  If you haven't looked at security as an interest topic lately, this would be a good meeting for you to attend.

For tonight's slide deck, click here.

We also have topics lined up for May (comparing internal and external clouds) and June (differences in running your own data center vs. a SaaS datacenter).  More details to come!

Meeting Details:

January 27th Meeting Recap

The January meeting is complete.  For the intro slide deck, click on 2011 meetings to the left.  The main presentation slide deck will be available soon.

Mike Walsh, who runs the Seacoast SQL Server User Group, will join us to present "I'm A Sysadmin, What Am I Supposed To Know About SQL Server?"

In this interactive session, Mike will address a lot of the following concerns (whether you're a new DBA or a SysAdmin forced into the role of DBA):

Are you the lucky one at your company who was assigned the role of part time DBA?
Do you hate dealing with those annoying DBAs always asking for more spindles?
When developers call for help troubleshooting SQL Server, do you ignore the call?
Are you sure you can recover your database the way the business is expecting?

We'll cover topics such as Backup and Recovery, Performance and Troubleshooting, Common Installation Mistakes, why the defaults and some settings can hurt you, other components (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS, etc.), and how to see what's going on in your SQL Server through queries and management tools.
